Atlantic Golf With a Links Twist
30 minutes from Lisbon, along the coast, Oitavos Dunes serves up an idea of links golf with an Atlantic flavor. Arthur Hills routed the course so that it winds easily around coastal dunes, umbrella pines, and bare oceanfront sections. The routing is varied: open holes with wind as your first aggravation give way to tree-lined fairways that require precision. Highlights are the par-3 14th, where club choice is difficult with the wind, and the par-5 18th, an excellent last hole in view of the clubhouse.
Course conditions are always excellent, with fast-running fairways, firm greens, and a steady but fair rate of play. It is one of the Quinta da Marinha resort courses, so it is an easy place to stay during a Portugal golfing break. The combination of view and stroke-making makes each round here memorable.
